When a Restricted Site is not a Restricted Site

Over the course of a dozen or so ZonedOut support emails with a gentleman, a few things came to light worth mentioning in regards to IE’s Restricted Zone, ZonedOut and Others.

1. A Registry Subkey - in this case domain names, that has no Value - is not assigned to any IE Zones. Therefore not only will ZonedOut (ZO) Not see the “site”, but it can’t remove what it can’t see. This applies to the IE Zone interface within Internet Explorer as well. To further complicate things, ZO won’t import or add a site to a zone if the subkey already exists.

So in the case of the guy with woes - He was importing IE-SpyADS for ZO, and ZO was only reporting 900+ sites added while IE-SPYADS for ZO is currently sporting over 16,500 sites. Bafflement ensued.

2 . The fast way out of this predicament was using DelDomains.inf to remove all domains in all zones. Next find out what the problem was, and deal with it.

3. It seems his problem was “Spysweeper” (a mighty fine program). Specifically the “IE Security shield”. Solution: temporarily disable the IE Security Shield, import IE-SPYADS for ZO - add a few extra sites via “SpywareBlaster” (Yet another mighty fine program) then re-enable his IE Security Shield.
